Abstract:

Objectives:
The aim of this study was to identify attributes of patient-‐centered cancer care related to diagnosis, treatment and after‐care/survivorship period by means of a systematic literature review.

Methods:
Protocol driven search in four databases, combined with a comprehensive secondary search strategy. Attributes of patient‐centered care were defined as interventions that represented high‐quality cancer care in respons to patients’ informational and support needs, physical needs, psychological and social needs and spiritual and existential needs. Two reviewers independently selected studies and extracted data.

Results:
A total of 15701 references were identified of which 141 articles from official databases and 15 sources from the grey literature were selected. We identified forty‐three attributes of patient-centered cancer care in relation to diagnosis (5 attributes), treatment (27 attributes) and after-care/survivorship period (11 attributes).

Conclusion:
Attributes of patient‐centered cancer care as identified in this study have the potential to inform different stakeholders on potential areas for quality improvement in cancer care. Further operationalization of the different attributes is required on a national or international basis to avoid the heterogeneous use of the attributes, unclear measurement dimensions and inconsistent results regarding the effectiveness of patient-‐centered interventions.
