Abstract:

BACKGROUND: During spring 2009, influenza A(H1N1) was associated with a high morbidity and mortality rate in Mexico and the United States. During the summer, the virus was imported in Europe. The aim of this study is to track the incidence of influenza and influenza-like illness (ILI) in Belgium and to describe the characteristics of the affected patients.

METHODS: In July 2009, The Belgian online A/H1N1 influenza surveillance system (BOISS) was set up to monitor the spread of influenza and ILI. Registrations were made by general practitioners. Only patients who met the WHO criteria for flu were recorded. The registration included gender, age-group, zip code, risk factors, treatment, hospitalization and mortality.

RESULTS: General practitioners (n=93) from all 10 Belgian provinces participated. Until mid November, 1154 patients (53% men) with influenza or ILI were included. Mainly younger people were affected: 42% was under the age of 20 years. A risk factor was determined in 18%, concerning mainly patients with chronic respiratory problems and children under the age of 5. A treatment with oseltamivir or zanamivir was prescribed in 12% and 3% of the patients were admitted to a hospital. Only one patient died. In the 44nd week a peak-incidence was measured (623 cases per 100.000 inhabitants). The time of the peak-incidence and the magnitude corresponded with the figures of the existing paper-based registration network.

CONCLUSIONS: The BOISS provides fast and accurate data on the circulation of influenza and ILI. Thereupon it provides complementary information regarding ILI compared to the existing registration.
